Thinking of Surgery for Your
Orthopedic Spine Patients? Prehab before you Preauth
Chances are you’re thinking of surgery for some of your
spine injury patients right now. Sometimes surgery seems like the only option.
We’d like to offer you another choice – consider a prehabilitation program.
What’s prehabilitation, you say? See below!
Definitions:
1. Prehabilitation: (prehab) a program of exercises
done pre-surgically to improve surgical outcomes.
2. The Southern Nevada Prehab Program:
A multidisciplinary approach to prehabilitation
that:
- helps you determine the need for spinal surgery
- prepares your patients for surgery
- promotes better surgical outcomes
That’s right – the SNFRP now offers prehabilitation! This
exciting approach to enhancing patient outcomes integrates expertise from the
areas of medicine, physical therapy and behavioral health to prepare your
patients for the best possible outcomes related to orthopedic spine injuries. We
can help you decide about surgery, or we prehab the patients you’ve already
referred for surgery.
Who should use the Southern Nevada Prehab Program?
- Potential surgical candidates for orthopedic spine
- Patients for whom you would like to enhance surgical
outcomes by implementing physical conditioning, education, and motivation for
aftercare compliance
What do you look for with these patients?
- Our treatment team includes a medical provider, physical
therapist, and psychologist/behavioral health specialist
- Each provider evaluates for predictors within his/her
specialty that are related to poor surgical outcomes
- There are many predictors of surgical outcomes. A few
include: level of physical conditioning; diabetes; smoking; history of
compliance with recommendations; substance abuse; anxiety related to surgery,
pain, or re-injury; etc.
What happens after the evaluation?
- Following the initial evaluation, the team meets to
build an individualized prehabilitation plan for your patient
- Typically, the patient’s program will consist of 5 to 10
half-days of physical training, education and/or behavioral intervention
